Three Amigos Blog: Leadership, Communication, and Social Influence (A Theory of Resonance, Activation, and Cultivation) by Brent D. Ruben & Ralph A. Gigliotti.
Kate Homminga, Rea Medrano and Jason Fojt presented an analysis over the book with a focus on the key components of resonance, activation, and cultivation in reference to creating and maintaining buy-in to organizational change. During the PodCast presentation, the three presenters identified their take-aways from the book and how leadership can implement long-term change in their organization. Kate Homminga acted as the moderator and each presenter was responsible for one of the three components of leadership, communication, and social influence in creating change in an organization.
Rea Medrano presented her take-aways on the topic of resonance in the book relating to the stages of change and importance of attention getters in presenting new ideas to your organization. The importance of being up to date on what is trending in social media to ensure that the way the new ideas are presented to garner trust and buy-in from those in your organization. Mrs. Medrano addressed the importance of maintaining engagement by ensuring that information is relevant to the interests of your organization to build trust in the credibility of the information being presented.
Jason Fojt addressed the importance of being a servant leader during the activation process of change. Each of the members acknowledged the importance of leadership to take an active role in the implementation and activation of change within their organization. Mr. Fojt addressed the natural urge for people to resist change necessitates that the need for leadership to be empathic to the needs of their employees and to take an active role in making the process as easy as possible for their employees. Mrs. Medrano presented the visible and invisible symbols to effective communication and how it is received by people. Mr. Fojt alluded to the communication iceberg used by Ruben and Gigliotti (2019, pg. 59) and how leadership must look at the actions of their employees to see if the information communicated was received correctly. The presenters addressed the importance of processes that will allow for change being communicated to be effectively implemented by those within their organization.
Kate Homminga communicated how leadership can put activation into play in their organization. She addressed the importance of effective communication in the feedback cycle and how leadership and followership skills need to be developed within organizations. Mrs. Medrano reinforced concepts addressed in the cultivation competencies of analytic, personal, communication, positional and organizational while also talking about how sub competencies address the factors that limit and/or fuel change.
In conclusion, the Three Amigos identified the need for leadership to be risk-takers, the cultivation of leadership and followership within the organization and the stages of change as being the biggest takeaways from the book. The importance of implementing change at the right time and place in the organizations where it is being implemented was identified as the key to creating positive long-term changes in the workplace.
